What is the chakra spread for?
This spread is a check-in rather than a question-and-answer tool. Use it when you want to:
- Get an overall picture of your emotional and spiritual wellbeing
- Find out where you feel stuck, drained or out of balance
- Choose a focus for meditation, yoga or journaling
- Track how your energy changes over weeks or months
The chakra system comes from spiritual tradition, and reading it through tarot is a reflective practice. It is not a medical assessment. If a card points to a physical area that is actually causing you pain or discomfort, please see a doctor or qualified health professional.
Because it covers seven areas at once, the spread gives a broader picture than most short layouts. That breadth is its main strength. Instead of asking about one problem, you see how different parts of your life affect each other, for example how stress about money might show up as tension in how you communicate.
The layout and each position explained
Lay seven cards in a vertical line, starting at the bottom with the root and ending at the top with the crown.
1. Root
Safety, stability, home, money and your sense of belonging.
2. Sacral
Pleasure, creativity, sensuality and emotional flow.
3. Solar plexus
Confidence, willpower and personal power.
4. Heart
Love, compassion, forgiveness and connection with others.
5. Throat
Communication, honesty and self-expression.
6. Third eye
Intuition, insight and clear perception.
7. Crown
Spiritual connection, meaning and trust in something larger than yourself.
A flowing, supportive card suggests balance. A heavy or blocked card suggests that area needs attention. A card with excessive or restless energy can point to an overactive centre.
What are the best questions to ask with it?
The spread works well with broad, open questions or none at all.
- Where is my energy balanced and where is it blocked right now?
- Which chakra needs my attention this month?
- What is behind my low energy lately?
- How can I feel more grounded and connected?
You can also focus it on one life area, such as "How is my energy around my relationship?" In that case, read each chakra as it relates to that relationship: safety in it, pleasure, power, love, communication and so on.
If you are new to the chakras, it helps to read a short description of each one before you start, so you know what each position covers. Keep that list beside you during the reading and refer back to it as you turn each card.
How do you read the positions together?
Look at the line as a whole before reading each card. Energy traditionally builds from the bottom up, so a blocked root can affect everything above it.
- Clusters of difficulty. Several heavy cards in the lower three suggest practical or emotional survival issues. Heavy cards at the top suggest spiritual or mental strain.
- Suits. Pentacles often feel at home in the root, Cups in the sacral and heart, Wands in the solar plexus, Swords in the throat and third eye. A card in a surprising suit can highlight an imbalance.
- Major Arcana. A Major card in any position marks that chakra as the main theme.
- Neighbours. Heart and throat together often speak about expressing love. Solar plexus and root together often speak about confidence with money or work.
Look up each card's upright and reversed meaning in the tarot card meanings library.
A worked example reading
Question: "Where is my energy blocked right now?"
- Root: Ten of Pentacles. Home and finances feel secure. Balanced.
- Sacral: Three of Cups. Friendships and fun are flowing. Balanced.
- Solar plexus: Seven of Wands. You feel you are constantly defending yourself. Slightly overactive.
- Heart: Two of Cups. A loving connection is healthy.
- Throat: Eight of Swords. Blocked. You feel unable to say what you really think.
- Third eye: The Hermit. Strong intuition, especially when you have time alone.
- Crown: Ace of Cups. Open, receptive spiritual connection.
The story: the base and the top are healthy, but the throat is tight and the solar plexus is working overtime. You may be defending yourself because you have not said what you need. Honest conversation is the focus. See the card meanings for more on each card.
Readings like this are rarely all good or all bad. Most show a mix, with one or two centres asking for care. That is normal and useful: it gives you a clear, small place to start rather than a vague sense that everything is wrong.
Tips for a more accurate chakra reading
- Ground first. Sit comfortably with your feet on the floor and take a few slow breaths before shuffling.
- Read from the bottom up. It keeps the order natural and helps you see how energy moves.
- Decide on reversals before you start. Reversed cards can be read as blocked energy, which suits this spread well.
- Focus on one chakra afterwards. Choose the most blocked card and give it attention for a week through journaling, movement or conversation.
- Repeat and compare. Laying the spread monthly shows real change over time.
- Stay grounded in daily life. The spread is a reflection tool. Pair its insights with practical steps like sleep, time outdoors and honest talk.
